Toric IOLs in Philadelphia – Dr. James S. Lewis
Also Serving Bucks County, Warminster, King of Prussia, Conshohocken, Delaware Valley and Phoenixville
As an extremely experienced Philadelphia cataract surgeon, Dr. James Lewis is thrilled to offer his cataract surgery patients throughout Bucks County and Montgomery County the most sophisticated intraocular lenses (IOLs), including the AcrySof IQ Toric IOL. AcrySof Toric is a special multifocal lens implant that corrects mild to moderate astigmatism in cataract surgery patients. Astigmatism is a refractive error resulting from an irregularly shaped cornea.
Toric Lenses: Are They for Me?
AcrySof Toric is manufactured by Alcon Laboratories. It received FDA approval in 2005 for correction of pre-existing astigmatism in cataract surgery patients. The unique design of the AcrySof Toric lens implant offsets the distortion of the cornea, thereby allowing light to focus properly onto the retina.
One advantage of AcrySof Toric is that, in many cases, it may eliminate the need for a limbal relaxing incision, a traditional surgical technique used during cataract surgery to correct astigmatism. During this procedure, incisions are made at the edge of the cornea to cause it to heal in a more regular (spherical) shape. However, while patients with mild to moderate astigmatism may be able to forego this step, Philadelphia cataract surgery patients who suffer from severe astigmatism may benefit from receiving the limbal relaxing incision or laser vision correction surgery in addition to the toric IOL.
According to a one-year study conducted by researchers at several U.S. eye surgery centers, toric IOLs provided much better distance vision when compared to a spherical control IOL. During the study, 256 patients received the AcrySof Toric IOL and 261 patients received the spherical IOL, also manufactured by Alcon. One year later, more than 40 percent of patients who received the toric IOL had distance vision of 20/20 or better compared to less than 20 percent of patients who received the spherical IOL.
In addition to astigmatism-correcting IOLs, Dr. Lewis also offers a range of premium multifocal IOLs, such as AcrySof IQ Vivity. He is also a leading Philadelphia RxSight Light Adjustable Lens and PanOptix implant provider.
